A glorious pre-The Piano Jane Campion film about the life and times of Campion's fellow New Zealander, the author Janet Frame. The story is not upbeat (Frame was misdiagnosed with schizophrenia and institutionalized for years) but a stubborn current of hope runs through all three chronological chapters, each one played by a different actor.
Campion initially prepared the story as a TV miniseries and applied a more straightforward visual style than we expect from her other, more expressive work. The result is an intimate experience that keeps us tightly focused on this singular, captivating figure as she goes through her ups and rather down-y downs.
It's a little weird to call it a treat but I don't think you'll disagree if you give it a go. If you do, please enjoy.
